Top Tips for Winter in London

Let's face it, London is a great location to visit at any time of year but winter is an especially fun time to visit with festive events and fantastic attractions to visit. We get asked all the time about the weather here in London and we are always on hand to offer some sage advice for any season and especially winter. If you are visiting soon, then take a look at our top tips for visiting London in winter!

1. Wrap up Warm

Although London does tend to be quite mild compared to the rest of the U.K., you will still need to wrap up warm against the elements as it is winter after all! If you're visiting for leisure purposes and plan on going in and out of shops, museums and on the tube, we recommend wearing layers that you can peel off easily if you feel a bit overheated on a long tube journey or strolling through a museum or gallery. A walk along the Thames or through one of London's stunning parklands will ensure that you warm up quickly and get the blood flowing. Keep the kids wrapped up too in scarves, hats and jackets and ensure that they wear footwear with a good grip for walking through dampened, slippery fallen leaves.

2. Bring an Umbrella

Yes, it does rain a fair bit in London (but not quite as much as you think!) and it is best to be prepared and to bring an umbrella in case you get stuck in a sudden down pour. A small umbrella kept in your handbag or rucksack is more manageable that an oversized brolley and prevents a soaking when on your day out in the city. More often than not, you won't need it but the London weather is slightly unpredictable in that regard.

3. Re-hydrate

Take advantage of all the great Christmas markets and festive drinks on offer and make sure to re-hydrate with a hot beverage or two to keep the cold away. Here, at Check-in-London we are partial to a decadent hot chocolate to fend off the cold or, if you are looking for something a bit stronger, nothing says winter like a fragrant mug of mulled wine! The Christmas Market at the Southbank Centre offer some wonderfully festive drinks and street food as well as Christmassy gifts and trinkets.

4. Explore Indoor London

If you feel like exploring what London has to offer in the way of indoor activities, well then any of the iconic museums are a great choice and our particular favourites are the National Portrait Gallery, the Hunterian Museum (not for the squemish!), and the Science Museum. For kids, the London Aquarium and the Natural History Museum are a must. Keep an eye out on social media for any interesting temporary exhibitions or try a little retail therapy in some of the huge department stores in the West End.

5. Festive Attractions

One of the great things about Winter in London is all of the festive attractions in the city. Hyde Park Winter Wonderland, Christmas Markets, and Christmas theatre and dance shows are just some of the highlights of the festive calendar. Another great thing to do in winter is to check out some of the ice rinks across the city. Some, like Alexandra Palace, have been around for years and are open throughout the year, while others only open for winter and Christmas festivities. Some of the best include the outdoor rink at the Natural History Museum and the London Eye. Read our blog for more info on the best outdoor ice rinks in London.
