Things to do for the August Bank Holiday in London

There is always something happening in London and none more so than the bank holiday weekend when the city plays host to a variety of events, festivals and performances. This bank holiday weekend sees London enjoy what is left of the Summer and the sunshine with carnivals, food and beer festivals and even, free orchestral performances. We have selected some of the best events happening in London this bank holiday so make sure you plan your weekend ahead of time and enjoy everything London has to offer!

1. Notting Hill Carnival

One of the top events on the London calendar, the Notting Hill Carnival celebrates all things Caribbean with energetic parades, great food and lots of partying. There is something to enjoy for everyone at this festival with family friendly events taking place on Sunday while the adults day is on Monday. Every year, the hardened London party-goers keep the party going well into the evening (and into the early morning) at the famous after parties with a reggae soundtrack of Caribbean rhythms and steel bands. The parade itself begins at 9 a.m. on both Sunday and Monday with the vibrant floats and dancers decked out in feathered headdresses and lots and lots of gold and sequins!

2. FrightFest 

If you're a fan of the horror genre, then this is the festival for you. The Vue West End hosts the 15th Film4 FrightFest with over 100 writers, directors and actors heading to the festival to celebrate all things gore. Some of the genres most iconic actors and directors will be at the festival including Robert Englund (A Nightmare on Elm Street) Maika Monro (The Guest) and John McNaughton (Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer). The programme this year includes the UK premiere of Zombeavers and an exclusive preview of Sin City 2: A Dame to Kill For.

3. Meantime Brewfest

Everyone loves a beer but even if you are a beer virgin, you're bound to find something you like at the Meantime Brewfest. The London Craft Brewery is hosting a craft beer festival with over 40 breweries from around the world in the picturesque setting of the Old Royal Naval College in Greenwich. A must for beer connoisseurs, there will also be expert discussions throughout the day from brewing experts as well as a beer and cheese tastings. A variety of street food will also be available to go with every type of beer from weisse beer to IPA. Your ticket includes a programme and a tasting note guide, a branded glass, and six beer tokens.

4. Food Festival at Hampton Court Palace

On the outskirts of London, Hampton Court Palace is hosting the BBC Food Festival this year on its stunning grounds with plenty of pop-up restaurants, celebrity chefs, and demonstrations. From fabulous food and drink producers to family entertainment, this makes a great day out for young and old. Find out about the Tudor kitchens or explore the famous maze and the 750 acres of parkland. This food festival will allow you to enjoy the last of the Summer holidays in one of London's most historical sites while sampling some amazing food from local producers.

5. BBC Proms

If you are looking for something a little bit more sophisticated this bank holiday weekend, the BBC Proms are holding a free matinee performance on this bank holiday Monday from the Ulster Orchestra. Prom 51 selection of music includes Dvořák's Slavonic Dances, Grieg's piano concerto, Bax's Roscatha and Bill Whelan's new Riverdance suite. The perfect introduction to classical music, all from the beautiful and historic Royal Albert Hall. If you don't get tickets to this performance, there are plenty of other performances to choose from as well with the Proms continuing until 13 September 2014.
