A Paramount View

Paramount - Centre Point Building - Tottenham Court Road

Gazing across the breath-taking 360 degree views of London’s cityscape from the 32nd floor of the Centre Point building at the epi-centre of the city at the corner of Oxford Street, it seems only obvious why the Paramount Restaurant and Bar has become one of the most chic and stylish places in wine and dine in town.

Sleek interiors and sophisticated furnishings by internationally renowned designer Tom Dixon create a discerning atmosphere that allows you to take in and enjoy a truly exceptional dining experience. But make no mistake, the food here is equally deserving of praise with a delectable selection of modern and classic British dishes created by Head Chef Colin Layfield who presents an impressive mix of A-la-carte options like pressed foie gras, double baked roquefort soufflé, veal cutlet and lemon sole as well as some genuinely mouth-watering desserts like raspberry mascarpone crème brulée, champagne sorbet and decadent valrhona chocolate puddings. Scrumptious!

Keep Calm & Carry On

Originating from the very attitudes in which people went about their daily lives during a time of conflict and distress in Britain, the “Keep Calm & Carry On" Poster was an understatedly simple wartime propaganda, that today has transformed into a brand of its own and taken the shape of a wide range of paradoxical memorabilia and merchandise for the modern consumer. The poster was introduced by the British Government in 1939 during the Second World War in order to encourage civilians and military personnel to maintain morale and keep spirits high, but was only ever distributed in limited numbers or forgotten in storage.

Speed Across the River Thames

The Thames Speedboat Ride is a definite must-do activity for those want to experience the city from a thrilling new point of view. Unlike the conventional tourist trails and city guides, this action packed boat ride is a combination of water sports and a unique sightseeing experience that is sure to get your heart racing and adrenaline pumping as you take in the sights and whiz past some of London’s most iconic landmarks and attractions like the Palace of Westminster, London Eye, MI5, St Pauls Cathedral, Tower Bridge, O2 Arena and many more.

The journey is made at a speed of up to 35 knots in fast Rigid Inflatable Boats that are extremely robust, stable and safe and zoom across all the way from Westminster Pier to the Thames Barrier. The whole adventure can last from 50 mins up to 1 hour 30mins depending on the package and includes a knowledgeable and comedy tour guide who provides the on-board entertainment and superb commentary.

James Bond's London

James Bond's home - London.
If you haven't already seen it, we definitely recommend the latest 007 movie Skyfall and that is not only because we were lucky enough to actually be on the set of the movie while it was being filmed back in February in Westminster near "M"s headquarters in Vauxhall. (photo below)
Topping the success of the previous 22 films from the 50-year-old celebrated James Bond franchise, Skyfall does not disappoint audiences and features plenty of drama, action and impressive special effects filmed around our capital. Even some very nerve-racking scenes on the London Underground that kept us on the edge of our seat.
But what's so amazing about the world's greatest secret agent? Well we all love him to bits because London is the home and headquarters of this suave and sophisticated international spy.

Redefining Luxury in Mayfair

The Grosvenor House Apartments by Jumeirah Living unquestionably places itself in the list of the top best serviced residences one can experience in London.

We headed over to Mayfair to check out this fantastic property and were truly impressed. Welcomed in by a charming concierge, the Check-in-London team were directed up to the main Reception floor which was breath-taking to say the least with an exceptionally stunning Atrium lounge area flooded by the sun’s brilliant rays that shone through a glass roof across a central courtyard that is also overlooked by the residences.

A Dolphin Square Lifestyle in Westminster

An address within its own right, the Dolphin Square property sits proud and prominent along the Westminster bank of the River Thames covering an impressive three and a half acres of land and collectively adding up to 13 striking red brick buildings all overlooking a haven of manicured gardens and a splendid water fountain.

A short walk from Pimlico station (or a slightly longer walk from Victoria station), past a beautiful church and many local amenities, reaches you to the Dolphin House reception area, where we took a few moments to admire the colourful art by Emma Moir on display at the time. With many of its original hotel features incorporated into apartment style living, it is no wonder that customers are choosing to stay here and making the most of the remarkable facilities that we were taken around to see like the sophisticated bar, family friendly restaurant, larger-than-average 18mtr indoor heated swimming pool, fully equipped state-of-the-art gymnasium, studio classes, squash courts, reputed wellness clinic and flower strewn landscaped garden area that lets you escape from the relax away from the hustle and bustle of Central London.

The River Cafe in Hammersmith

If there is one thing West London has that attracts a stylish mix of delightful locals and well-known celebrities, its a fine selection of riverside dining and from our 10th floor Hammersmith office window you can just about catch a glimpse of the gourmet stretch which runs from Putney to Chiswick.
Check-in-London's Brett, who also happens to live in the neighbourhood, decided to investigate just what all the fuss was about and headed over to one of the Thames Riveiras's most acclaimed and priciest haunts, The River Cafe.

Early to Bed and Early to Rise

"Early to bed, and early to rise, makes a man healthy, wealthy and wise" was published by Benjamin Franklin who has also sometimes been mistakenly been credited for the concept of Daylight Saving Time.

Daylight Saving time was implemented in England around 1916 and was conceptualised by New Zealand entomologist George Vernon Hudson who found the after-hours daylight extremely useful to his hobby of collecting insects. Here are some interesting clocks we came across during our apartment visits around London.

Traditional Afternoon Tea at The Rubens Hotel

Afternoon tea is a traditional affair that many Londoners and London visitors are quite familiar with these days. Most hotel establishments around the capital offer an Afternoon Tea selection that are perfect as a treat for friends, loved ones or even a business meeting and some even jazz their menu with stylish themed cakes, gourmet bread and of course exclusive irresistible teas from around the world.
Check-in-London’s Tanielle, lover of all things traditional and tea related, recently headed over to the Rubens at the Palace Hotel in Victoria for the popular Rubens Traditional Afternoon Tea and came back very pleased with the whole experience.

Baker Street Apartments in Marylebone

When it comes to living in Central London, only a few other neighbourhoods quite compare to the hip and in-the-heart-of-London status that Marylebone has become so very desired for. And perfectly placed to soak up the fashionable Marylebone lifestyle are the new Baker Street Apartments.

The Check-in-London team headed over to the new property last week to take a closer look on what is on offer and were very impressed. Set just 5 minutes from Baker Street station and the world-renowned Madame Tussauds Wax Museum, the Baker Street Apartments effectively balance everything a modern traveller could need and tick all the boxes when it comes to location.

Seek And You Shall Find - Your Perfect Serviced Apartment

Looking for a Serviced Apartment in a city like London can be so daunting. With so many great locations, its not the easiest decision if your visiting the capital for the first time or have some specific requirements while traveling.

Friends who have stayed have clearly enjoyed the savings, not to mention the convenience of space and self catering that is ideal for families or long stays and are urging you to give it a go, assuring you of the benefits serviced apartments have over hotel rooms. So why is it taking so long to find the right apartment ?

'Serviced Apartments' can sometimes be misrepresented and maybe perceived as hotel lodging or inn-like but make no mistake these apartments offer some of the most chic and contemporary accommodation for city living today. Of course, price does play a huge part in the overall experience and if your looking for something budget don't expect 24hour reception. However if your planning to make your trip to London a memorable one, mid-range apartments offer the ideal choice for business or leisure travellers who don't want to be troubled by messy tenancy contracts and service bills of an unserviced property or the restrictions of overpriced hotel rooms. The flexibility and true cost saving advantages that serviced apartments offer are not easy to ignore and with the trend of the Home Away From Home gaining such momentum the industry is growing rapidly.

But for now, Yes the industry has got some fundamental issues that need sorting out for example, Instant Availability. The fluctuating supply of serviced apartments has left a somewhat fragmented network that is being focussed on and is in the process of being streamlined and standardized to offer better accommodation solutions to visitor and a more reliable service.

Well its only human to want to ask for help ? and guess what, help is on hand. Check-in-london Serviced Apartments brings you the selection you Want with the service you Need to find yourself the perfect apartment to suit your budget and needs whether your traveling alone, with friends or with family. Our team is based in Central London and offer you their dedicated support and assistance with their extensive experience of serviced apartment rentals and knowledge of London completely free of charge.

The big question thats on all our minds is - What will it be like ? Now, there is no way you can possibly know what the apartment will be like if your booking it from abroad. But thats not a problem as we keep things simple yet informative offering you a detailed summary of the apartments as well as pictures and videos where possible giving you a brief idea of the area, local amenities, transport links and main attractions so that you can make the all-important decision that will ensure you have an enjoyable stay in the capital. We guarantee you the best rates in London and provide clear and concise check-in and check-out procedures making it easy to book your accommodation without any hassle.

Below Ground Level

Living on the Lower Ground Floor may not be to everyone’s liking, and sometimes the thought of a basement flat could be enough to entirely put off a guest from a great property. But the reason we are talking about Lower Ground Floor Apartments today is because of their overlooked cost-effective advantages.

Most traditional properties including Georgian, Edwardian or Victorian style of residential buildings in and around the capital have a Lower Ground Floor. Historically speaking, this may have once been the quarters for servants or storage, but recent refurbishments and conversions have turned this below-street level of space into more attractive fully-contained spacious apartments.

Contrary to its damp, cold and dark reputation, Lower Ground Floor Apartments offer a bright, spacious, warm and welcoming atmohsphere and hold the keys to a great value stay in the capital.

St Marks Apartments in Islington

Here at Check-in-London, we love visiting exciting properties in our city and last week’s soiree hosted by the fantastic team behind the Citadines Aparthotel chain gave us the perfect opportunity to experience the high standard of quality and service on offer at the St Marks Apartments.

Discreetly tucked behind some well pruned trees on City Road in Islington, the St Marks Apartments can be easily missed, but this striking property offers a range of affordably prices and superbly appointed residences that should not be overlooked by any visitor to the capital.

Fountain House Apartments

The reason we have chosen the Fountain House Apartments as our "Somewhere Special" Serviced Apartment this week is because the lush Four Bedroom Penthouse Apartment you see spaciously unfolding in the photo above is simply one of our top "Special" properties in the capital. Now it’s no secret that park views in the heart of the city come at a significant premium, but this apartment has so much more than just stunning vistas of manicured greenery.

Top Services for London Corporate Travellers

Serviced Apartments for Business

Last week we attended the Office 2012 Exhibition at London Olympia. The show featured some insightful presentations and talks focussing on the Business Travel market and highlighted some of the current trends affecting corporate bookers, office managers and executive assistants when buy accommodation and travel today.

Traditionally, serviced apartments were the obvious solution for long stays, corporate relocations or temporary placements and secondments, but these days their business centric facilities, cost savings and easily accessible locations make them a perfect solution for corporate short stays and business trips from one night, a few weeks or many months.

Here at Check-in-London, we are well versed with all the requirements of the modern business traveller and place many corporates in London serviced apartments and aparthotels that feature flexbile cancellation terms and a host of convenient facilities catering to the business set.

We take a close look at some of these important amenities that our corporate travellers and bookers consider when they book their stay.

Top Services for London Corporate Travellers:

1. 24 hour reception/concierge

Many serviced apartments have a 24 hour reception or concierge desk and ensure a member of staff is available round the clock to assist with anything guests may need during their stay. They also offer the choice of an Early/Late Check-in (additional charges may apply) and with business trips often scheduled around flight timings, local working hours, individual work commitments etc, flexible check-in times has become an important requirement for most business travellers.

2. Free Wi-Fi

Internet access is such an important aspect of work life and it can be so frustrating to check-in to a hotel and find out that it costs almost half the nightly room rate to use the internet for a day. Serviced apartments, on the contrary, usually offer wireless (sometimes wired) internet access FREE of charge, so guests can easily do work or connect with clients and colleagues via the internet without any hassle.

3. On-site restaurant & bar

On-site restaurants and bars usually come as standard in a hotel and are also available in some hotel-style serviced apartments. For guests who may not have the time or energy after a busy working day to come home and use their fully equipped kitchen facilities, on-site restaurants and bars offer a place to relax while being served a delicious meal or a refreshing cocktail. It also gives guests the option to entertain or have social meetings with clients or colleagues without having to leave the property.

4. Work desks

Many serviced apartments come equipped with fully functional in-residence work desks and can really help an individual be more productive during their stay by giving them the space to focus on work or prepare for meetings and presentations. Usually a work desk will come with stationery, a direct dial telephone, internet connection and power points where guests can comfortably rest or charge their laptop, phones, iPads etc.

5. Car parking

On-site secure car parking facilities are ideal for business travellers who prefer to drive or hire a car during a business trip. Guests can save money on parking costs and save time by avoiding the hassle of searching for parking spaces.

6. Business centres and meeting rooms

A wide range of Hotel style Serviced Apartments or Apart hotels also offer Business Centres and Meeting rooms. Business centres feature services like faxing, photocopying, scanning and office suites whereas meeting rooms come with state-of-the-art equipment, audio-visual presentation technology and conference facilities that present a professional experience perfect for delegates or corporate group bookings.

Whites Row Apartments

Whites Row Apartments

The latest property to hit the Check-in-London website is the brand spanking new Whites Row Apartments. We were lucky to get a sneak preview of the property last week and even though at the time the decorators were still adding the final touches, it was plain to see that the Whites Row Apartments had everything and more you could ever need for the perfect city living experience.

While some of us were tempted to indulge in some fashionable treasures around the corner at Spitalfields Market and some of us drooling at the thought of a a delicious curry from nearby Brick Lane, we managed to resist the temptation and quickly found ourselves at the front door of the building, past some famous street graffiti from Nathan Bowen (Like us on Facebook to see more) and a snapshot of the gleaming curved Gherkin landmark.

Everything was newly fitted and freshly scented and as we walked into the apartments we felt like we were unwrapping a new present. The cool urban surroundings seamlessly translate into the décor within the flats from the bold graphic prints, smart bright colour palette, high quality furnishings, sleek modern furniture and spaciously bright open plan living and dining spaces that are equipped with the latest high tech appliances and cozy home comforts. Outside the window you can see how London has embraced and mixed the old with the new as traditional industrial brick buildings sit alongside conceptual glass skyscrapers. You are also spoilt for choice if transport links is high on the priority list during your stay with easy connections literally only a short walk away like Aldgate station giving you access to the Metropolitan Line, Aldgate East station giving you access to District, Hammersmith & City Line, Liverpool Street station giving you access to Central, Circle, National Rail and Stansted Express and Aldgate bus station with many local bus routes.

If you choose to mingle with stylish trend setting Shoreditch folk or find time to absorb some of the rich East London multi-cultural atmosphere or even get down to serious business around the corporate hotspots around Liverpool Street, then this should be one of your top choices as it places you slap bang in the middle of it all giving you a place to relax, recharge and enjoy being in the comfort of your very own fully equipped home from home.

Currency Exchange in London

Currency Exchange

The UK pound sterling is the fourth most traded currency in the foreign exchange market and is a generally stable and high-value currency. Exchanging foreign currency for British pounds is extremely easy in and around the city of London. There are numerous Bureaux de change in airports, banks, post offices, street kiosks and travel agencies where you can exchange money. But it is always wise to shop around for the best deal, as exchange rates and commission charges may vary from place to place.

Some of the best rates are available in Banks like HSBC, Natwest, Barclays and Llyods TSB, Travel Agencies like Thomas Cook and sometimes Post Offices. Banks, building societies and post offices are open Monday to Friday between 9-5 and some are also open Saturday mornings. Travel agents are often open on Saturday afternoons, and some may open Sundays.

Before you travel, consider bringing your money in several ways - cash, credit/debit cards and traveller’s cheques which can be replaced if stolen. While there are no restrictions on the amount of money you can bring in or take out from the UK, make sure you are aware of the rules in your own country.

ATM cards are a cheap and convenient way of obtaining British pounds and they accept most international cards with the Visa, MasterCard or Maestro symbols. Using an ATM card means you never have to carry around large amounts of cash but keep in mind that there may be a limit on the amount you can withdraw each day. Some ATMs (or cash points as they are called in the UK ) may charge your card for withdrawals especially if you have a non-UK account.

Credit/Debit cards like VISA and MasterCard are widely accepted in shops around the UK and are easy way to pay for things as they operate on a good exchange rate and a fee of roughly 1.5%. Check with your bank for rates and charges and try to notify them of your trip before you travel. American Express and Diners Club are less commonly accepted and sometimes carry additional surcharges.

If you are exchanging Traveller’s cheques, make sure you buy them in UK pounds sterling as there are additional fees to exchange traveller cheques in other currencies. Thomas Cook travel agencies charge no fees for cashing UK pounds sterling traveller’s cheques issued by another one of their own branches anywhere in the world.

Serviced Apartments with Gyms

Serviced Apartments with Gym

After the festive season, the New Year starts to make us feel obliged to eat more healthily and do more exercise giving us a reason to turn over a new leaf with new ambitions, new commitments and new ways to improve our life.

However by now, most of us are beginning to feel the strain of sticking to our New Year fitness resolutions. On top of that, the cold and sometimes rainy weather can be an obstacle to even the most determined individual. But for some, going to the gym is a key part of an everyday routine.

Like Hotels, Serviced apartments are realizing the importance of being able to provide well-equipped fitness and leisure facilities for their guests. Gyms and fitness centres are a great place to refresh and rejuvenate your body after a busy day and can be a great benefit to those travelling on holiday, for work or even relocating.

Staying in a Serviced Apartment with an on-site gym or leisure centre gives you more flexibility with your schedule and can be a real stress buster providing the perfect setting for relaxation and well-being.

Most modern serviced apartment developments in the Capital feature a gym or a swimming pool and steam room that are included in the price. However the facilities and equipment in each Serviced Apartment gym/leisure centre can vary and while some are open for 24 Hours, others may be only accessible during certain hours.
Check-in-London offers a range of Budget, Mid-Range & Luxury serviced apartments that provide gymnasiums or leisure facilities for their guests.

New Year Fireworks London

London's Firework Display on New Years Day

We have had a fantastic year here at Check-in-London and as always would like to sincerely thank all our colleagues, customers and partners who have supported and helped us to grow from strength to strength.

As Mayor Johnson impressed us all with a spectacular show of dazzling new years day fireworks we take a deep breath and prepare ourselves for the upcoming events in 2012 that are set to shake things up in the City of London including the Queens Diamond Jubilee (June 2-5) which will see excitement and celebration on par with last year’s royal wedding and the much-anticipated London Olympics (June 27- August 12).

Wishing you all the very best for the year to come.
